Chris Moyles' Quiz Night, Sunday 10pm, Channel 4

Our verdict: One star rating

Posted by Stewart Turner

Chris MoylesCrop circles, unidentified flying objects, and the enduring popularity of Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles – just three of the great mysteries of our age. Last night, scientists at Channel 4 ran a series of tests on the latter by devoting 50 minutes of Sunday night TV to the man they call Moylesy, presumably to see if hosting one of the biggest piles of steaming nonsense ever to air would manage to dent the big man’s stock.

Have you ever popped into your local pub for a quiet pint only to find you’ve stumbled into a ropey quiz presided over by a question master with about as much charisma as a half-eaten packet of pork scratchings? Well, it seems that’s the experience the producers of Chris Moyles Quiz Night set out to emulate. The show saw three hapless celebrities – Mark Ronson, Louis Walsh and Barbara Windsor, all of who are doubtless on the phone firing their agents this very minute – compete against Moyles in a “current affairs” quiz, with Sharon Osbourne helpfully asking the questions on a pre-recorded video.

Of course, when we say “current affairs”, we’re talking current affairs of a distinctly Moylesian variety; describing the appearance of a Viagra pill, identifying Christian Bale and Agyness Deyn’s mums, that sort of hilarity. The winner went home with a colour TV donated by Chris from his living room (Ha Ha HA!), while the loser faced the unsavoury prospect of singing ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia’ to close the show. Frankly, if first prize involves visiting Chez Moyles to pick up the telly myself, I’d choose the latter any time.

Very much a man for whom the phrase “a face for radio” could’ve been invented, while Moyles’ success on the wireless is something that continually baffles me, I’m even more confused why Channel 4 would want to waste their time on giving him a TV show after his 2002 donkey Live with Chris Moyles was packed off to the knacker’s yard after being universally panned. Still, the studio audience, presumably all forcibly hooked up to a hefty supply of nitrous oxide for the duration of filming, positively lapped it up. I guess there’s no accounting for taste.

His best days are gone. Does nobody notice the some what perverted comments about women on his radio show?? Also not sure how he gets away with degrading larger women with his vile comments. Let's be honest his mrs is only interested in him for his status. If she is happy to live a lie then so be it, it's more important to some people to have a "celebrity" tag rather than to work hard to earn your own living. Anyway the guy is clearly not funny, and is only still on radio one because of how his show is edited and helped by his fake co-hosting hangers on, such as comedy dave & rachel who doesn't stop banging on about her fiance Mali!! When Chris cracks a joke/comment he goes straight into a bit of music to hide the fact that nobody laughed! I can't believe people don't notice. In my opinion he has only lasted this long on radio one because all the other radio breakfast channels are so poor. As soon as one of them makes an effort to create a decent show Chris will be finished. So other radio channels what are you waiting for??????

OMG! i cant believe people dont like this. i really love it, its comedy gold!!

wot a pile o crap!!!!!!!! how does this pass 4 tv?

A WASTE OF AIRTIME ON TV & RADIO

I love Chris Moyles on the radio but what a pile of crap on the tele! most stupid programme on television!

Justin Lee Collins all the way!!!!!

What an absolute crock! What was the point of having the panel come out in turns? To add the only bit of animation to an abysmally dull programme? And why the obsessively used on/off button to phase the panel in and out?
Shame, Channel 4 - get this overhyped bighead off.

Why does channel 4 always have game shows presented by celebrities, played by celebrities, and have all the questions about celebrities?

Absolutely awful. I don't mind the radio show and the show was on while I was on the internet. I have to agree with all the critism, I just cannot believe these people, who defend him to the hilt. You're aren't his friends, have a bit of objectivity. If we're talking about the quality of that show, Moyle's wit, etc, then it was terribe. End of.

Scott Mills is the best, Chris Moyels is a loser. He loves the sound of his own voice well too much. That's why you never hear any music. He ripps everyone 2 bits around him. Id listen in a morning if the soo called "saviour" got sacked!!!!

Of corse the show will work. Chris Moyles has fans thats why his radio 1 show is so big. He is a legend. If you dont like it dont watch it.

I watched more of this than the Justin Lee Colins Show. If you think that that the Chris Moyles show was bad then do not watch Justin Lee Colins, he is nothing without Alan Carr.

I've recorded it and to be honest I'm not in that much of a hurry to watch it, but the man is a legend on the radio. What has that idiot Scott Mills got to do with this either? That man is a fool, Vernon Kay as a stand-in anytime please... Chris, sod what others say, those who love you, adore everything you do or say - we're too busy laughing to care what these fools write anyway. If it doesn't work, so what, you're still The Saviour in our eyes!

Go and see your GP, quick.

'whats kilimanjaro got to do with it?'

Totally agree. He's got a face for radio where he rules - stay there.

he's awful on the radio and he's even worse on the telly...Bring back Scott Mills any day at least then you get to listen to some music not the utter tripe that comes out of Moyle's mouth every morning again and again and again and....oh yes again

Not good, the ego has landed and fallen flat on its face. He can be very good on Radio 1 as well as very bad (the TV show was the latter). Moyles surrounds him self with yes people. I prefer Scott Mills but have to admit that Moyles has talent he just needs to get a reality check and some honest advisors.

Chris pick your tv work carefully

whats kilimanjaro got to do with it, the show was utter tripe from start to finish, "think about that"

Why do people have to express this kind of opinion of a man who has just helped to raise over a million pounds for comic relief? this article was more personal than anything. give me a break. the show might be awful but give the chap some credit for trying

what a waste of 50 min stick to dj if you must

I enjoy listening to moyels in a morning but that show was so scripted, and badly! You might be the saviour of radio 1 chris but you're not going to save ch 4 with that rubbish!

I can't stand Chris Moyles on radio 1 - he is the only DJ that has me searching for another station. I have a sense of humour but cannot face him and his hangers on feeding his over inflated ego each day. I agree with Jase - Scott Mills is more entertaining, less opionated and plays more music!!!

have a go if you must - but how many of you have climbed Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the 'poor' - think about it.

In the words of Louis Walsh......'He reminds me of a young George Clooney'!!!

All these non Chris fan's why watch it or listen to him?

Ross, Norton and now Moyles, how many more talentless egomaniacs will be given their own shows to wallow in smug self satisfaction and degrade and exploit the guests who were naive or desperate enough to appear. It really is SAD.....

Completely agree with Nixx. If you don't like Moyles, which you obviously don't then why watch it & write about it? Plus why do you have to get personal about him... Does his appearance really have any relavance?

I personally love Moyles breakfast show on the radio & from what i saw of the tv show it will appeal to a similar audience.

I'll stick up for his radio show which I find very entertaining, but I can't believe that the producers, writers, and Chris had no idea how bad the quiz was before it was aired !!!

Being a fan I even Sky +'d it, but barely managed 5 minutes before deleting it. Sooooooo bad.

I've not watched this yet (sky+ed it), but wonder why someone who doesn't like Chris Moyles would tune in to watch it? I don't like Terry Wogan on the radio, so I don't watch him on the telly. Common sense, surely?

Each to their own. WOuldn't telly be cr@p if we all liked the same stuff?

totally agree, a waste of time and merely a showcase for his showbiz crony mates, dreadful, at least it sent me to sleep

Moyles, big waiste of space, who on earth gave him tv air time, Scott Mills for a tv show and radio 1 brekky time, sack Moyles

i thought it was good and entertaining, for his first show he did well i thought and if you don't like moyles why comment or watch the show you are the ones who are those type of sad people who sit at home looking for something to complain about and completely miss the context of which the show is to be taken - i.e. as a laugh, some easy to watch sunday night tv! as for moyles in general he is very good in my opinion!

The Chris Moyles story has been a case of "The Emperor's New Clothes" right from the start - a talentless, unfunny bully and an over inflated ego - unfortunately that seems to be enough for a lucrative career

This show was never going to work it was obvious & the commissioning editors should have known that before dishing out the money to clueless producers and talentless presenters.

I thought I was the only person in the UK who couldn't stand this talentless obnoxious oik. He was the main reason I stopped listening to the radio

Chris Moyles is obviously not to some peoples taste, people with no sense of humour. So these people who dont like him on the radio are just not gonna give his tv show a chance. I thought it was very entertaining. (Shame its on the same time as Match of the day 2 though!)

Moyles is genuinely talentless and it amazes me when people keep giving him opertunities to prove it. Why anyone would want to appear as a contestant in what was always going to be an awkward affair is also a mystery.

Personally, why post this blog beofre its even on air??? Chris Moyles is a load of rubbish, and i don't listen to radio 1 when he is on. Switch over to radio 2 while he is on. Anyway, i don't know why i'm even writing this, cos Chris Moyles ain't worth it.

what a waste of airtime
sorry chris.

just awful programme with a awful man

Chris Moyels Quiz Night? Nope, I'd prefer Dysentery.

motormouth Moyles is my big turnoff on the radio, why would i want to watch it on TV.

Definately a face for the radio. After enduring 30secs of this pants I switched over. Come on Channel 4, you've always been behind the ratings for everything, it's about time you employed a professional team of program selectors instead of some cheap labour! No wonder you struggle to keep your viewers!!

I thought it was enjoyable sunday night tv. If you dont like chris moyles then dont watch it. Theres others channels to watch. I had a right laugh watching it. Hope radio 1 listeners keep pulling the viewings in. Chris is a legend.

It's about time Chris stopped trying to break into TV as everything he's aired has been poor. I used to enjoy his radio show, but even that's starting to get too long in the tooth...Scott and Chappers are far more entertaining! Bring back Mark and Lard!

i have to say that channel 4 have really sunk to a new low with having this idiot hosting a quiz show,,, he has the personallity of an egg,, is he gonna be the saviour of channel 4??,,, i think not

Utter garbage, I truly hope that Moyles get the slating he rightly deserves, along with the genius who thought this would make great TV!

chris moyles is CR@P, enough said.

professional Quizmaster lol

Scraping the barrel kind of tv. The button Moyles kept pressing should have been for an ejector seat preferably with him sat in it.

Oh come on, be fair. Yeah, it wasn't Mastermind but at 10.00pm on a Sunday night what more do you expect? I myself thought it was traditional Chris Moyles, and if you don't like his radio show why on earth would you expect to like his TV show? Long Live Chris!

As a professional Quizmaster with a regular Sunday night at my local, I thought it was a load of rubbish and switched off well before the end.
