Blunderland: the sequel?
Posted by Darren Lee
I know what you’re thinking: wouldn’t it be great if there was a festive theme park which could recreate the snow-covered winter wonderland that is Lapland, without all the hassle and expense of actually having to fly out there?
Well, you’re in luck! A new multi-million-pound venture called Lapland UK is set to open in Lamberhurst, Kent, replete with ice skating, husky dogs and reindeer as well as an audience with Father Christmas for each family. The catch? It could set you back up to £87.50 a head for anyone over the age of 18 months – and an extra tenner if you want a picture with Santa. Bah humbug!
Founder Mike Battle is keen to distance Lapland UK from the not-at-all similar venture Lapland New Forest, which opened around this time last year and was promptly dubbed “Blunderland” by the tabloids. Trading standards officials were called in after presents given to children didn't work and parents complained that the £30 entrance fee was a rip-off, leading to the park shutting down at the start of December.
Defending the pricing, Battle said: “The ticket prices are a significant amount of money, but not compared with going to Lapland. We need to create a magical experience, but everything is in the price and people have a fabulous day here.”
So there you have it: £87.50 may sound a lot, but it’s a mere pittance compared to the amount you could have forked out if you’d taken an actual holiday to a remote area of outstanding natural beauty and wonder – as opposed to an ersatz replica in the home counties. Quit your whingeing!
