Is Amir Khan ready? Your views...

Khan_blogAmir Khan extended his unbeaten record last night after a resounding victory over Martin Kristjansen at the Bolton Arena.

Khan won via a seventh round stoppage after flooring the experienced Dane three times before the referee called a halt to the bout.

The 21-year-old dominated the fight and never looked in danger after delivering a mature performance that brings him one step closer to the world title.

Khan has everything required to be a world champion. Incredible physique and unbelievable hand speed along with strength, punching power and accuracy.

So now it’s time for Khan to step up to the plate and see what the Olympic silver medalist is all about. Give him the shot at Nate Campbell’s WBO lightweight belt and we’ll see how good this kid really is.

What did you think of Khan’s performance last night? Is he the real deal or are there still question marks over his ability? Let us know by adding your comments in the boxes below.

Sporting strops... Your View

JohnmcenroeAfter Robbie Keane and Shane Long threw their shirts to the floor in disgust having being substituted during away defeats with Tottenham and Reading respectively, we began thinking of other sporting temper tantrums.

We've come up with a top ten which you can check out by clicking here. However, this list is far from exhaustive. You must have your own favourites which we've either forgotten about or chosen not to include. Send in your views using the boxes below.

Does Chambers deserve another chance?

Chambers_7march_pa_200Whatever the result in the final of the 60m at the World Indoors today, all the chat will be about Dwain Chambers, according to former hurdling world champion Colin Jackson in an interview with Orange.

And Jackson also insists Chambers has no place in Team GB and will prove a disruption and irritant to his fellow team-mates at the championships in Valencia, Spain.

But does the former drugs cheat deserve a second chance or should Chambers be banned from competing ever again for Team GB? Read our interview with Colin Jackson in full and post your comments below...

Haye v Maccarinelli...who will win?

Haye_v_macIn the early hours of Sunday morning, Londoner David Haye will step into the ring with Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli to see who will become the undisputed cruiserweight champion.

The fight at the London's O2 Arena is being billed as the biggest British contest since Nigel Benn's clash with Chris Eubank in 1993.

It should be a titanic battle between two heavy hitters but who's your money on? The "Hayemaker" or "Big Mac"? Let us know by adding you pre-fight thoughts and predictions below. Plus, don't forget to read what Maccarinelli's trainer Enzo Calzaghe has to say by clicking here.

Sporting villains... Your view

DwainchambersDwain Chambers' convincing win in the World Indoor trials on Sunday, ensured his inclusion for the championships next month. But officials and pundits alike would rather the former drug cheat was not involved. One even asked the Sheffield crowd to boo him!

The controversy got us thinking of the most vilified sportsmen and women in sporting history - we've put together our top ten which you can read here.

We're also keen to get your input. Are there any 'villains' we've omitted? Should any of our ten not made the final cut? Using the boxes below, you can tell us your top ten or add in any of your own views.

Keegan back from the dead!!!!

What the hell is going on at Newcastle????? Last week they sacked Allardyce, then they sniffed around "good ole" Harry Redknapp, next the media start suggesting Keegan might be interested in returning, three minutes later he is settling down in his old leather chair. Has the place gone mad???

Keeganblog

Keegan is a legend at Newcastle both as player and manager and the club have once again pandered to the fans who chant stuff outside the ground. But this is not a wise move. Short term fix maybe, long term they'll be looking for a new boss come the 08/09 season and Keegan will be back on a Spanish golf course. One thing Keegan likes to do is walk out when he doesn't think he can cut the mustard.

Granted he'll try and bring back attacking entertaining football and he'll have the crowd's ear, but football and the players have moved on since Keegan's managerial glory days. The problem with Newcastle is the players; overpaid, underworked and choc full of a lazy "so what" attitude. Newcastle is rotten and I don't think Keegan's emotional managerial style will solve this. Keegan might sob into his pillow over a 1-0 defeat at Derby, most of the players won't. Unless he clears the decks and brings in his own players and has time to nurture them he might stand a chance, good thing the Newcastle board are fantastic at giving managers time to settle in ;)

I wish him all the best and I really hope I'm proved wrong, but I just can't see this working.

Hatton v Mayweather Jr...Your view

HattonmayweatherRicky Hatton's brave bid to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr for the WBC world welterweight title ended in failure this morning in Las Vegas.

Despite starting the fight positively, Hatton was gradually out-thought and then out-boxed by 'Pretty Boy' before being knocked down twice in the 10th round.

We've put together a gallery of pictures from the much-hyped bout. You can also read how the fight unfolded here. But most importantly, post your thoughts on the fight using the boxes below.

Who ate all the pies?...Your view

Andy_fordham200x150_5As you can see from this picture, Andy Fordham has lost a lot of weight in the last year - 10 stone to be precise. But "The Viking" will forever be remembered for his rather large presence on the oche.

After the darts player made an unsuccessful return this past week when he failed to qualify for the 2008 World Championships, it got us thinking about other sportsmen who enjoy their fair share of picnics.

You can view our selections here and then send in your thoughts below. Are there any others take-away lovers that we've missed out?

Read our list here and then send in your views on the selection below. Are there any other sports events you thought were boring or controversial or just a complete waste of time?

Party's over for Freddie

Posted by Mike Dale

'Life is a carnival,' is the slogan of this Cricket World Cup. It seems Andrew Flintoff is not sure where the partying stops and the hard work and responsibility of representing your country begins.

AndrewflintoffempicsThis morning's tabloid revelations probably raised a chuckle in many households. A lads' night out to a crap nightclub and a 4am paddle in a stolen pedalo; we've all done it, haven't we? Boys will be boys.

However, this story has been like a dam bursting. Cricket pundits have been only too eager to condemn him, talking of similar, previously-undisclosed incidents in Australia and offering comparisons with Paul Gascoigne and Geroge Best.

It seems Freddie has been treating recent tours like an extended stag do. Not just any tours - the Ashes and the World Cup.

Being dropped for the game against Canada caused a minor stir, but stripped of the vice-captaincy? Very clearly, something is afoot here.

Sports fans in this country love a jack-the-lad type who can hold his drink. It shows that despite being mega stars, they're really one of the boys and no different from the rest of us.

The difference is, we're not playing for England, we're not role models and we don't have pots of cash that leaves us open to nefarious influences and brings temptations wherever we turn.

Does today mark the beginning of the tragic self-destruction of a national sporting icon? The remainder of this World Cup provides the perfect platform for Flintoff to prove this is not the case.

Why do Wales always beat England?

By Chris Dempster

What a surprise that Wales should save by far the best performance of their miserable, humiliating Six Nations campaign for the visit of England.

Wales_2Having lost abjectly at home to Ireland, before suffering in Scotland, France and, worst of all, Italy, no-one really expected them to pose a resurgent England too many problems....except myself.

Time and again, Wales pull out all the stops to beat England. The atmosphere in the Millennium Stadium is seemingly raised several hundred decibels. The players suddenly re-discover pride in the red shirt. Out of nothing the tackles are harder, fiercer. The intensity is almost overwhelming.

Do the Welsh Dragons actually care about the Six Nations? Is beating England all that matters? Judging by the ludicrous, over-reaction among players and fans alike at the end of the game it seems so.

Why not save such jubilant scenes for when, or rather if, Wales win the World Cup rather than meaningless, dead rubbers?

Caption competition: Paul Nixon

by Chris Dempster

The way England celebrated their CB Series triumph, you would have thought they had won The Ashes.

Paul_nixon_c_empics

Paul Nixon had no Ashes scars to bear, but he might have after this man-handling from a number of ecstatic England fans.

We want you to send in a witty, imaginative caption to accompany this shot. Post your suggestions using the comment form below this entry and we'll publish our winner and runners up here on the Sports blog next Monday.

Last week's winner

Our favourite caption to accompany this picture came from Ken Wilkinson:

Bird says - "This is the last time I'll shop online for crickets."

Hatton set for the big time

Posted by Tom Gledhill

The showdown we've all been waiting for is set for June when Ricky Hatton will hopefully collide with Jose Luis Castillo in what promises to be a blockbuster bout.

After both enjoyed victories in Las Vegas on Saturday night, albeit neither looking on top form, the agreement has reportedly been made for the pair to lock horns this summer.

Hatton1

It is a fight that the Hitman will relish as he aims to show America and the world that he is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

He failed to totally convince in his points victory over Juan Urango on his Vegas debut as he reclaimed the IBF light-welterweight crown. The Manchester City fanatic looked short of his best and a shadow of the boxer who beat Kostya Tszyu in 2005.

Mexican legend Castillo also struggled as he edged a split decision over opponent Herman Ngoudjo. But none of that matters.

Hatton2

The important thing was that they both picked up victories and as a result, we will now be treated to a fight which Hatton assures us will see both men beat the hell out of one another.

Let's hope that Ricky can add Castillo to his hitlist and sparkle like the lights of Las Vegas.
