It’s been a long 12 months but at last we can call Lewis Hamilton a world champion - and a worthy one at that.
After blowing his chance to win the title in his debut season last year, Hamilton was hung drawn and quartered when he surrendered a 12-point lead and finished runner-up in the title race behind Kimi Raikkonen.
The McLaren driver was harshly criticised, labelled a ‘bottler’ and when he made a mess of the Japanese GP three weeks ago, some were suggesting lightning would strike twice.
However, after a dominant victory in China, all that was required was a top-five place in Brazil – at the very same Interlagos circuit that had previously crushed his dreams.
With the pressure back on the Brit, Hamilton finished in that all-important fifth spot during a dramatic race where he literally secured his maiden title on the final corner.
Since Damon Hill’s triumph in 1996, British success in the sport has been sparse. David Coulthard was often the bridesmaid and never the bride throughout his career while Jenson Button failed to ever turn up for the wedding.
But now Hamilton has ended a run of 12 years without a British champ after winning an enthralling title race which went right down to the wire.
What do you make of Hamilton’s historic win? Does he deserve the title? Where does that rank in the great sporting moments? Send in all your comments in the boxes below.
