Englands worst ever team would not be worthy of the name without both Gary and Phil Neville.
This pair of pub footballers made England a laughing stock of world football.

Dave Bell you are so right. Either that or you are a complete **sser!!
Don't bother getting up this weekend - it's going to rain.

that person who picked this team has no brains at all and knows nothing about football.his comments on stewart downing were an absolute disgrace.if he dares he should come and see downing play week and week out for middlesbrough,if he is so bad how come teams have to double up on him all the time and ask alex ferguson if he feels if stewart is no good.think you would be surprised by his answer.

I thought the England team was made up of England players...!!!

This is an absolute appalling list written by someone who has either done virtually no research or has no clue about football. The only player out of the 11 who is genuinely in England’s worst ever 11 is Michael Ricketts, who was absolutely awful even when playing in League One, and is probably England’s worst ever player. And the entry for Stewart Downing is an absolute disgrace, if not downright insulting. It’s almost as if it was written to get Boro fans to immediately cancel their Orange contracts. Downing is a superb player, easily our best player against Trinidad setting up two of the goals and a natural Left Winger unlike Joe Cole who was awful against Joe Cole and should really be playing in Centre Midfield as he’s best there and plays there even when he’s picked on the left. Just off the top of my head I can think of the following wingers who’ve played for England who aren’t anywhere near Downing in terms of ability Seth Johnson, Mark Walters, Mark Barham, Mark Chamberlain, Andy Gray, Keiron Richardson, John Salako, Steve Guppy. And if I stopped to think of it there would undoubtably be many more.
Quite frankly anyone who puts Downing in England’s worst ever 11 hasn’t got a clue about football.
Here’s my worst 11
GK Richard Wright – Has never even been Premiership standard
RB Earl Barrett – A very average player, would be a Championship journeyman is he was still playing today
LB Paul Konchesky – I still can’t believe he ever got picked for England
CB Antony Gardiner – A complete carthorse see Paul Konchesky
CB Steve Howey – See Antony Gardiner
RW Seth Johnson – I was lost for words when he got his game
LW Steve Guppy – Barely played a game in the Premiership as he just wasn’t good enough
CM Barry Venison – Words fail me
CM Joey Barton – No excuse can be made for picking him for any team
CF Michael Ricketts
CF David White – Couldn’t even get a regular game for a very poor Man City team in the Nineties. Only just edging out Francis Jeffers, Peter Davenport and Brian Stein for this spot.

Dont get carried away with the 4-1 win England.I love football but as far as england go there just not good enough to win anything their over paid bigheads the england team mainly consists of man utd and chelsea players and a couple of liverpool players their so up their selves they thing every game is an easy win wront attitude to have no game is an easy game.Get rid of shrek rooney and love myself beckham get another goalkeeper calamity james is crap and so is robinson. Its sad to be an england fan because you no we get so close but yet so far away from winning anything.
Posted by: Craig | 11 September 2008 at 02:03
well lads they won so are you still all going to moan

How could anyone include Gerard or Carragher in an England worst 11. I despair, and I am not a Liverpool fan.

Posted by: Ross Ricketts | 10 September 2008 at 19:38
Who cares anymore. Foreign Manager, players who don't care about wearing the shirt, and then there's Paul Scholes. A disgrace to England let alone the English Team.
Posted by: Ross Ricketts | 10 September 2008 at 19:34
time to rattle the cage a bit. if you want an under performing england player what about gutless gerrard. never had a good game in the white shirt (probably cause he aint getting paid as much). heres my full team anyway.
1. scott carson
2. gary neville/glen johnson
3. wayne bridge/ashley cole
4. neil ruddock/carragher
5. rio ferdinand
6. david batty
7. frank lampard
8. steven gerrard
9. defoe/rooney/fowler
10.steve mcmanaman
11.stewart downing
the worrying thing is that most of them are in the current team!
Posted by: pete | 10 September 2008 at 19:26
The current England team playing at the moment, same old boring players, forget the big names, try looking at the championship, there are better players, and they would play there heart out for England
Posted by: David Crook | 10 September 2008 at 19:26
I think it's a disgrace Chris Powell has been selected for this worst ever England team. He never let the country down, always put in a solid performance and even if he did have a shaky game v Finland, name me one England player who has NEVER had a bad game. Most of the current squad all play worse than Powell did and it's an insult to Powell the footballer and as a man to be selected in this just because there are few other alternatives at left back.
David James
Phil Neville
Glen Johnson
Neil Ruddock
Joleon Lescott
Carlton Palmer
Andy Sinton
Geoff Thomas
Tony Daley
Wayne Rooney
Alan Smith (gooner)
yes Rooney because you can count on your hand the number of times he has played well for England let alone even score, fat useless waste of space. We need Heskey and Owen up front tonight but where is Owen!

Just watch Englands performance tonight to see the worst England team. A gutless load of overpaid overhyped rubbish your likely to see assembled. Needs a damned good shake up from start to finish. Tell them if they lose tonight they can forget the next game. They wont be playing in it. I also bet drastic measures will not be taken if they are beaten. A bit like cricket contracts, jobs for the boys [a la Vaughan]
Posted by: david bell | 10 September 2008 at 18:27
lol, downing in the worst england team ever. picked by 3 different england managers, chased relentlessly by spurs, everton and liverpool... yea hes terrible.
some people dont know much about football it would seem.
Posted by: dan | 10 September 2008 at 18:23
Not a bad selection with many a deserved member of the Taylor reign of horror!! But for me a couple of amendments are needed so here goes
Robert Green - how & why
Gary Neville - useless without beckham and just as bad with him
Martin Keown - the missing link should be in a zoo not an England shirt
Gary Mabbutt - Spurs stalwart .... at scoring own goals!!
Chris Powell - should never have journeyed into an england shirt
Kieran Richardson - sad macam
Frank Lampard - if hes one of the best in europe then i'm the best to ever grace the game - hes not even the best at chelski
Carlton Palmer - a puppet without strings
Stewart Downing - MaClowns love child still get caps unbelievable
Alan Smith - gutted he's in black and white - please buy him Everton please
Michael Ricketts - his exemplary record speaks for itself

Theres only 1 STEWART DOWNING 1 STEWART DOWNING. Downing is class and shouldnt be in englands worst 11. I admit Joe Cole is better but Downing is still mint.
Posted by: ??? | 10 September 2008 at 18:14
Gary neville lucky to get so many caps if rob jones hadnt of had to finish early he wouldnt have got any. Still he wont get anymore.
phil neville what a joke, but still a joke with 60 caps, rattled with ugly stick it, still it wont be long before he joins his brother on the scrapheap.
Paul scholes lets face it whimped out when the going got tough unforgiveable. Trys to prolong his career by not playing for england, now tries to prolong his career by getting sent of regularly, a three match ban doesnt half help those tired old legs.
paul ince just got dropped for not being so good at any level. He would have fitted in better on a programme like big brother than motd. Just wasnt world class or even any class.
Posted by: Ian | 10 September 2008 at 18:05
This england team should be outstounding , we have top class players to choose from, they perform week in week out for the clubs that pay them hundreds of thousands a week. so my recomendation is ....... let the players wear their club shirts...... they dont deserve to wear an England crest over their hearts.(will retract statement if we win in style tonight, i have some faith left)
Posted by: matt parker | 10 September 2008 at 18:04
oops i missed a midfielder out. i'll go with barry,he does absolutely nothing that effects the game.i doen't understand what he is in the team for.
Posted by: david webb | 10 September 2008 at 18:00
some strange choices here given the recent performances of a team of overpaid tarts.i,d kill to have batty still playing. at least that would be 1 player who wouldn't give the ball away every 2 minutes and would also want to get the ball when his team didn't have possession.as for slagging beckham off'it's just laughable.if your argument is that he is past it have you noticed how bad a team we are now as opposed to last 10 years when we've had him as a first choice.he's still set nearly every goal we've scored since coming back.

rb carragher cb k.curle cb powell Lb shorey rm lennon cm scholes cm mcmanaman Lm merson st fowler st ricketts the reason i picked scholes and carragher is because they retired for there country and quite young thats disgraceful and fowler good for liverpool but didn't live up to his big rep for country
Posted by: dynamite | 10 September 2008 at 17:02
What a rubbish subject this is for a blog because we want to live in the present and not go into history. Sack the Orange Editor ! Oh ! and if the England players don't deliver against Croatia sack the lot of them as well !
Posted by: Frank Doberman | 10 September 2008 at 16:45
I see this blog has stimulated some intelligent comment then?! Blimey, it's hardly the Guardian on here is it? Can anyone actually express themselves in plain English these days or is it all 'txt spk' and calling each other names? Talking of English, has there ever been a worse England player than Carlton Palmer?
Posted by: Zach, west London | 10 September 2008 at 16:27
think the team being picked just now wins it.
worst performers - but best paid.
and at the end of the day thats the most improtant thing to them.
Posted by: simmo | 10 September 2008 at 16:07
Gerrard Beckham and Rooney and some others are great individiuals but the team at the moment is SHOCKING. Whether the players are good or not, they clearly dont play well together! Never mind changin the managers, change the squad around!
