Good Week: Ronaldo, Diana Vickers, Baywatch fans, Roger Federer
by Greg McDonald
It was a real big week for Cristiano Ronaldo, as Real Madrid’s new No.9 was presented to a packed Bernabeu Stadium after finally completing a world record £80m move. But though Ron proved a bigger draw than team-mate Kaka, he still couldn’t pull the Barcelona crowd that turned out for a glimpse of Maradona in 1984. But then, great as Ronaldo may be, he's never scored a goal quite like this.
It was a week to sing hallelujah for former X Factor star Diana Vickers, as the 17-year-old whose dreams looked to have been felled by the all-conquering larynx of Alexandra Burke last year was revealed as the lead in West End show The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. The Blackpool lass has come a long way since this first audition for Simon Cowell and co.
It was a sunshiney week for Baywatch fans as plans were revealed for a blockbuster movie version of the TV classic which famously saw David Hasslehoff star, direct, produce and sing the closing theme. And with the Hoff lined up for a film cameo, we can hardly wait to jump back on the bandwagon.
It was a glorious week for tennis ace Roger Federer as the Swiss claimed a sixth Wimbledon title and a fifteenth Grand Slam, surpassing the record of a watching Pete Sampras to become the undisputed greatest in history. And as we’ve come to expect from the father-to-be, he took immortality in his modest stride.
