Bad week: Sir Ian, wiggling women, Lyrical Terrorist, Amy Winehouse

Posted by Greg McDonald

It was a rough week for Met Chief Sir Ian Blair as political enemies lined up to demand his head following a damning report into the police shooting of innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005. The embattled Sir Ian is no stranger to controversy, as this feature shows.

Scientists claim the more hip-swinging a woman’s gait, the less fertile she probably is, as biologically monogamous females give off less attractive signals as fertility increases. We’re not sure if the same thing applies to John Travolta’s legendary Stayin’ Alive strut, but judging by the tightness of his trousers we think there might be something in this science lark.

It was a terrible week for Samina Malik, the self-styled “Lyrical Terrorist” who wept as a jury found her guilty of terrorist offences.

Her poem The Living Martyrs contains almost the worst line we’ve ever heard: “Move to the front line to chop chop head of kuffar swine.” Though we reckon she’s got some work to do before writing lyrics as bad as these.

Finally, Amy Winehouse had another week to forget after her home was raided by police and husband Blake Fielder-Civil was arrested in connection with an alleged plot to fix a trial.

This follows on from her off-key rendition of ‘Back To Black’ at the MTV Europe Music Awards last week, a performance which brought added poignancy to the line “I died a hundred times”.
